Teams are to submit 3 page executive summaries of their projects for the challenge. Judges will review the applications and finalists will be chosen for the final round of the competition.

Written Business Plan

• Written Business Plan Submission: A complete written business plan from the invited and confirmed teams will be due to the YUM Global Sustainability Challenge online on or before October 15th, 2012 no later than 11:59 EST. Please submit an electronic version via email in Adobe Acrobat PDF.

Challenge Update

Congratulations to the following six semi-finalists. A snapshot of the proposals follows:

American University: Convenient, small-scale organic recycling facilities
Arizona State University: Mobile application dedicated to connecting hungry Americans

University of California, Berkeley: Energy management system for the food industry
University of Louisville: Insulation that responds to temperature conditions

University of South Florida: Step-by-step education program to aid organizations in going green
University of Southern California: Decentralized soilless agriculture for urban environments

The next round of the competition will include submission of a full business plan and a public presentation at the Louisville RSC on November 7th-9th. The two finalists will then compete, head-to head, to win the prize.

About the Competition

The Yum! Brands Global Sustainability Challenge is designed to recognize and award grants for outstanding student innovation in sustainability related to the focus areas listed below. Teams from around the nation will compete for $20,000 in cash prizes that will be awarded to winning submissions.

Eligibility

We’re inviting Undergraduate and Graduate students to submit plans of outstanding sustainability innovation related to Yum! sustainability focus areas. Contestants must be students of an Undergraduate or Graduate degree program at an accredited college or university in the United States and faculty advisors must be employed by the same university as the contestants. Teams should not have more than six (6) students. Employees of Yum! Brands or any affiliates are not eligible to participate.

Why compete?

Yum! Brands restaurants are located on university and college campuses all over the country. Participating in this challenge provides an opportunity for students to connect with Yum! Brands in efforts to expose innovation in sustainability.
